Welcome to the Cardiff University Mountaineering Club; one of the biggest and most active sports clubs in the Athletic Union. As a club, we pride ourselves on being to able offer one of the most wide ranging and entertaining experiences for all our new members. We offer something for everyone: From our awesome social nights out to the immense snow covered mountains of the alps, there is great scope for complete beginners and experienced climbers alike to explore, play and push themselves in situations many people would never even dream off! Membership is available to all students attending at Cardiff University, and there is also a limited number of associated memberships for ultra keen students not studying at Cardiff. If you would like to find out more or join our club feel free to pop down to the Mackintosh pub right on campus (google it!) at around eight pm every monday during term time!
Below is a more detailed explanation of what we have to offer you, the student here at university:
|
We cater for every level of experience:-
Beginners: The club is very much structured around teaching and helping beginners with little or no previous experience until they can climb safely and independently on their own. Virtually all our leaders and teachers were taught themselves by older members of the club when they first joined! We provide all the equipment as well, so people who are not sure whether climbing is there thing yet don't need to get bogged buying lots of expensive new gear.
.
Experienced: The club has climbers at every level from V-Diff to high E-grades and you can never be too good or too bad. For our more experienced members we offer several trips exclusively customed to serious mountaineering (Scotland and the Alps being our most serious trips). Additionally, there is always the opportunity to push hard rock grades at the locations of our more mainstream trips.
Casual:
Maybe you find climbing good now and then but aren't completely obsessed by it? CUMC's social side is just about as extensive as the climbing side! Being one of the biggest clubs in the union, our nights out are something to remember. Our socials are regular, often themed and extremely enjoyable without crossing into silly initiation drinking fests. If you want to meet people, climb sometimes and party often then this is the club to join!
We cater for every type of climbing imaginable:-
Mountaineering: The club runs an annual trip to the alps every summer. It is our most serious trip up some of the highest mountains in Europe. Usually staying in a campsite down in the valley, our time is split between relaxing and socializing at camp or pushing ourselves high up on the hill. It is an awesome and truly magical trip, one which all members should aim to go on!(A certain level of experience required)
Winter Climbing: Our other serious trip is our winter trip to
the Scottish Highlands, staying in a bothy or renting a holiday cottage. This is often to
the Glencoe or Cairngorms areas but has also taken in less famous areas such as
Kintail. If conditions are even slightly reasonable the we aim to tackle ice or
mixed winter routes, otherwise it is Munroe bagging. We are also known to jet off to
North Wales if conditions are suitable. Expect freezing cold conditions, early starts, dark walk-ins and some seriously impressive snow and ice climbing. Again another trip that should not be missed!(A certain level of experience required)
Outdoor Rock Climbing: At most weekends and summer
evenings your find us out on the rock. The club is very active in South Wales
climbing with several members being involved in writing the new guide book. There is
plenty to do here from the beautiful Gower to the newly bolted sandstone quarries,
and for every grade from beginner to extreme climber. We also go further afield to places such as: North
Wales, The Peak District, Pembrokeshire, Dartmoor,The Lake District, Portland, Yorkshire and many other places. At the end of each academic year we usually spend around ten days on a climbing road trip around a specific area, climbing at some of the less visited and hidden crags that we would never have to time to visit on a normal weekend.
Indoor Rock Climbing: We are lucky enough to recently have had the largest climbing wall in Wales open right on our doorstep! Boulders recently opened just off Newport road, literally twenty minutes from Cathays, the main student area. We take a minibus down there every evening on a Tuesday and a Thursday, though with its closeness to student area expect to see familiar faces if you head down outside of these times.
Bouldering: As mentioned we cover all areas of climbing
and mountaineering, including bouldering. For the last fifthteen years the club has been
spending its easters in Fontainebleau, France, the niggest tradition within the club; the best bouldering area in the
world. This is an hugely popular trip involving up to forty people. We basically
spend a relaxed week sunbathing, drinking cheap red wine and ticking the occasional
problem; a very social trip.
If you would like to get a fuller appreciation of what our trips are really like, please have a read in the trip reports sections where a write of every weekend and holiday trip is recorded.

Cardiff probably has more to offer climbers that you think. O.K., so its not
Sheffield or Chamonix but there is more that enough rock climbing within day-trip
distance to keep you entertained during your university career.
Pembroke, The Gower Peninsula, The Wye Valley and the South Wales Valleys
can all be reached within day trip distance. Also, for weekend trips, The
Peak District, North Wales and Cornwall can all be reached by last orders on Friday evening.

Pembrokeshire is nationally famous for its hard, steep,
traditional limestone climbing. It is mainly suited to extreme climbers and contains
some of the most testing routes in the country such as The Big Issue (E9!!!!). There
is also climbing on sandstone and rhyolite to be found.
The beautiful Gower Peninsula is one of the most
attractive places to climb in the country and is just over an hour away. Underated
on a national scale it is an excellent limetsone area for the sub-extreme climber,
but also has traditional routes up to E7. There is also over a hundred sports climbs available.
The Wye Valley offers multi-pitch, limetsone climbing
only about 45 minutes from Cardiff. It contains routes up to four pitches
high. There are also bolted quarries for sports climbers.
The South Wales Valleys are being developed into one of
the best sports climbing venues in the country. While they may not be as attractive
as the Gower they do offer several hundred recently bolted lines on sandstone and
limestone, with grades up to F8a+. The nearest climbing is within 15 minutes of the
city centre so they are easily reachable on summer evenings.
